Let's talk about scenery shall we....the cars, bikes, auto rickshaws, cows, dogs, crows, trash and bodies everywhere...not dead ones, don't panic! It's quite an incredible vista let me tell ya...a feast for the eyes. My jaw would drop daily within our first month here in awe of it all.
Our street leads on to the main East Coast road which runs parallel with the ocean....the rather exotic sounding 'Bay of Bengal'. Immediately on it you are met with an orchestra of horns honking and vehicles of various speeds weaving in and around each other up and down in a mad frenzy! It's essential you have a driver here unless you have grown up with the roads as it's madness...but strangely, a sort of organised chaos of madness with an unspoken understanding. I can best describe it as a pedestrian rule system on the roads...imagine you are in Chicago airport at peak season....so many people rushing up and down a single hallway...with people stopping and starting, switching directions at the last minute then weaving around each other making verbal apologies...but it works right? People don't get knocked over too often in the rush of it all....exactly the way the roads are here, except it's a menagerie of different vehicles and 'horned' apologies. Our driver John is an expert in the craft of traffic negotiation....i am fascinated daily to see how he effortlessly gets in and around traffic, across blocked junctions, manages to miss hitting cows, children and manic dogs in the process all with out missing a heartbeat! Quite a skill!
This is what I see when I step outside my tiny indian supermarket...this is midday and very quiet!
So that's the road system....now on to the life found upon it's sides.....
Notice crows feeding off cows, feeding off trash.....nice :-)
